Weary of Worry

We have a small group currently reading through C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" in letter 6 Screwtape is delighted that the "patient" is most certain to be called up to serve in the war.  A win for Satan as it is a time of uncertainty, fear, hope, anxiety, and suspense keeping the "patient" focused on what will happen to them instead of what God wants him to do.  This is where I was at, focusing on what might happen to me and my career instead of what God was leading me to do.

I am sorry to admit that I let worry weigh me down even after being reassured that there was nothing to worry about.  Why? Why did I do that to myself?  No matter how I tried to not worry or focus on something else that worry kept creeping back into my mind, my heart, and I began to dread the day I would find out if it was worth all the worry or not.  There seems to be so much I can focus on to worry about and last week I decided to not to give into worry but focus on God and His desires.

Guess what.  That did it!  By placing my focus on God, not my desires the thoughts of worry stopped creeping into my head and my weariness ceased.  I was able to focus on God's blessing and see the path He has outlined for me to follow.  I had stopped leaning on God's Word and was relying on what I was hearing from others.  Paul wrote Philippians while in a Roman prison waiting for the outcome of his trial which would most likely be death.  It is a stern reminder that God is in control and that keeping our focus on Him and the things that are of Him will help us persevere through times of trail and suffering.

Philippians 4:4-9

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.  The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you."   NASB
